This intake system has been developed to offer the highest possible flow rate whilst maintaining the lowest intake temperatures possible. Each component has been designed to provide the turbo with a smooth and free flowing path. The intake tube has an internal diameter of 103mm or just over 4″ and has a smooth curvature from the filter housing all the way to the turbo inlet. The filter itself has been specifically designed for this intake and has a huge outer diameter of 210mm or 8.3″ with a filtration surface area of over 130,000mm^2. The patented Venturi housing has been designed to provide the maximum internal volume possible for the RSQ3 engine bay space available and provides laminar flow to the turbo tube. Finally the duct seals the filter opening to the front slam panel but is not restricted by just the stock entry feed. We have lifted the front of the duct to now provide an extra opening behind the hood which is equivalent to an extra 7″ diameter hole for the intake to draw from. We designed the shape with a continuous curvature and maximised the internal volume without affecting the airflow negatively. The inlet is finished in raw carbon so has no clear coat - which would not be able to withstand the heat generated from the turbo and exhaust manifold. The carbon construction allows us to keep the inside flow surface smooth which helps with reducing the surface friction and in turn allows airflow to move easier. We ensure strength and rigidity by maintaining a 2mm wall thickness throughout the part. Finally for added protection there is a heat reflective layer applied where the tube crosses the exhaust manifold. This reduces the radiant heat absorbed by the tube. The advantage of using carbon fiber over the traditionally used cast aluminium is mainly down to the thermal conductivity and the ability to keep the inside smooth. The table below summarises the advantages.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhen the RS3\/TTRS accelerates, the turbo generates intense heat as it spools. Since the face of the turbo is directly connected to our CNC machined flange, we designed a silicon coupler to also act as a thermal barrier between the carbon tube and the metal flange. Internally the silicon has a spacer which separates the carbon and metal surfaces. This reduces the conductive heat transfer and therefore allows power to remain more constant since the inlet does not heat soak as quickly as the stock inlet does.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWe provide a choice of turbo flanges which are all CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminium and anodised. We decided on keeping the OEM air inlet to feed a specifically designed heat shield which sits flush up to the bonnet. An opening on the side opposite to the engine also helps with vehicles running stage 3+, as there is indirect airflow to this area and during testing a fully closed airbox caused restrictions.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUsing carbon fibre brings obvious\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ebenefits of strength, weight, and aesthetics.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eHowever, a part that is often forgotten is its low thermal conductivity, which means it reduces heat soak and transmission of heat to nearby items. This has a better effect on performance when cool as this is to provide the engine with more oxygen (denser air), thus improving the combustion in each cylinder. In addition, by regulating and reducing the air temperature, it also increases the reliability of an engine by keeping the AFRs (air fuel ratios) in each cylinder at a safe level, which in turn, can increase an engines power due to the air being cooler. A bigger bang is then created within the cylinder, providing the correct amount of fuel is added. This can equate to an increase in BHP and torque. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe use SolidWorks CAD, 3D prints, and numerous dyno sessions to truly unlock the power. Simulation testing played a large part in the design process to help maximise the airflow. The 3D printed prototypes helped with comparing our simulation testing to real world driving conditions. This is a valuable comparison that is used in the top tiers of motorsport, now being brought to your vehicle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing able to test 3 different 8Y RS3’s on 3 different independent dynos has been of vital importance to our development process. We were also able to test on a LHD 8Y that was completely stock.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith a completely stock tune vehicle we were able to see peak gains of 6BHP. However further analysis of the dyno graph shows that this peak BHP figure was produced 200RPM earlier (6097RPM instead of 6298RPM). Additionally, the power curves were smoothed across the entirety of the rev range, with gains seen across the board. To pull out some snapshots from the rev range as examples, at 3000RPM using just FMINDK47 saw an\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eincrease of 25BHP\u003c\/strong\u003e, and at 4500RPM there was an increase of 17BHP. Torque figures saw similar gains across the rev range, with a peak torque figure increasing by 17NM at around 100RPM earlier.
