VW quotes 320PS but these cars consistently dyno at 340–345bhp — and there's a huge amount more locked away in the Simos 19 ECU. With a full recalibration of boost pressure, ignition timing, fuelling and wastegate control, we extract 390–400bhp and up to 530Nm from the standard Continental turbocharger. The Continental turbo fitted to the Golf R has significantly more headroom than the IHI IS38 in the MK7 — it's a bigger, more capable unit with an electronic wastegate actuator that gives us extremely precise boost control.
