Fiesta ST180 Exhaust Buying Guide
Our quick recommendations
Which is the best exhaust for the Fiesta ST180?
Cobra Sport is our go-to exhaust manufacturer for the Fiesta ST180 and ST200.
Its systems are hand-made in Sheffield from stainless steel and offer excellent
build quality, fitment and sound.
For most road cars, we recommend starting with the
Cobra Sport 2.5-inch cat-back exhaust
.
It produces a noticeably deeper and louder exhaust note while retaining the
original catalytic converter and remaining suitable for normal road use.
What is the best-value Fiesta ST180 exhaust upgrade?
A cat-back exhaust offers the best value for someone primarily looking for
improved sound.
It replaces the exhaust from behind the catalytic converter while leaving the
original emissions equipment in place. This makes it relatively straightforward
to fit and avoids the additional noise, cost and emissions considerations of a
complete turbo-back system.
Our normal recommendation is the
Cobra Sport 2.5-inch cat-back
,
which is available in resonated and non-resonated configurations.
What exhaust is best for a standard or Stage 1 Fiesta ST180?
For a standard or Stage 1 road car, a cat-back exhaust is normally all that is
required.
It provides more exhaust sound without removing the original catalytic converter
or making the vehicle unnecessarily loud. It is also the simplest option when
straightforward MOT testing and everyday refinement are priorities.
Choose the resonated version for a quieter, more refined result or the
non-resonated version for a louder and more aggressive sound.
What exhaust is required for a Stage 2 Fiesta ST180?
For a proper Stage 2 setup, we recommend a complete turbo-back exhaust.
This replaces the exhaust from the turbocharger backwards, including the
restrictive standard catalytic-converter section.
The
Cobra Sport Fiesta ST180 turbo-back exhaust
can be configured with a sports catalyst for a road-going car or a de-cat section
for off-road and motorsport use.
An upgraded intercooler and suitable ECU calibration should also form part of a
well-prepared Stage 2 package. Read our
Fiesta ST180 tuning guide
for the complete upgrade path.
Is a 2.5-inch exhaust sufficient for Stage 2?
Yes. A good-quality 2.5-inch exhaust is sufficient for a normal Stage 2 Fiesta
ST180 or ST200.
It provides enough flow for the majority of stock-turbo builds and is often the
better choice for customers who want strong performance without making the
exhaust excessively loud.
A three-inch system offers greater ultimate flow. In our experience, a comparable
2.5-inch setup may be approximately 5–10 bhp behind a full three-inch system at
higher power levels.
Customers planning a hybrid turbo or further power increases should consider the
Cobra Sport three-inch cat-back
or the complete three-inch turbo-back configuration.
What is the difference between resonated and non-resonated exhausts?
A resonated exhaust includes an additional silencer in the system. This reduces
overall volume and helps produce a more refined exhaust note.
We normally recommend a resonated system for customers who cover long motorway
journeys, use the car every day or want more sound without making the car
intrusive.
A non-resonated exhaust removes this additional silencer. It produces a louder,
sharper and more aggressive sound while retaining the main rear silencer.
The non-resonated
Cobra Sport cat-back exhaust
is our preferred all-round option for customers who want a noticeable sound
increase without moving to the extreme Venom box-delete system.
How loud is the Cobra Sport Venom exhaust?
The
Cobra Sport Venom box-delete exhaust
is the loudest option in the range.
It removes the largest rear silencer from the exhaust, producing a substantial
increase in volume compared with a conventional resonated or non-resonated
cat-back system.
It is best suited to customers who deliberately want an extremely loud and
aggressive exhaust. It may be too intrusive for frequent motorway driving or
customers wanting a refined everyday car.
Sports cat or de-cat?
A high-flow sports catalyst is the appropriate choice for a road-going Fiesta
ST180 or ST200.
A good-quality sports catalyst offers significantly improved flow compared with
the standard catalytic converter while retaining emissions-control equipment.
In performance terms, there is normally very little difference between a
well-designed sports cat and a de-cat pipe.
However, an MOT pass cannot be guaranteed. The complete vehicle must still meet
the required emissions limits and the catalyst and engine-management system must
be functioning correctly.
A de-cat pipe removes the catalytic converter entirely and is intended for
off-road or motorsport use only. It is not suitable for use on the public road
and will not pass an MOT emissions inspection as a compliant road setup.
The
Cobra Sport sports-cat and de-cat front-pipe options
allow the system to be selected around the car's intended use.
Is a remap required after changing the exhaust?
A remap is not normally required when fitting only a cat-back exhaust.
A sports-cat downpipe can also be fitted without immediately remapping the car,
although suitable ECU calibration is recommended to obtain the full performance
benefit.
Fitting a de-cat pipe will commonly trigger an engine-management warning because
the ECU detects that the catalytic converter is no longer operating as expected.
Suitable software can prevent the resulting catalyst-efficiency fault from
repeatedly illuminating the warning light.
A remap should form part of any proper Stage 2 turbo-back exhaust installation.
How much power does a Fiesta ST180 exhaust add?
A cat-back exhaust alone normally produces only a small power increase. On most
cars, the main benefit is the change in exhaust sound rather than a major gain in
peak power.
-
Cat-back exhaust: typically only a few horsepower.
-
Downpipe and sports catalyst: approximately 5–10 bhp with
suitable supporting modifications and calibration.
-
Complete turbo-back exhaust: approximately 10 bhp as part of a
properly mapped setup.
These figures are typical real-world expectations rather than guaranteed
standalone gains. The final result will depend on the turbocharger, intercooler,
induction system, fuel quality and ECU calibration.
Will a Fiesta ST180 exhaust drone?
The exhausts we list are professionally designed to minimise unwanted cabin
resonance where possible.
However, the more silencers and emissions components that are removed, the
greater the likelihood of intrusive noise or drone at particular engine speeds.
A resonated cat-back system with a sports catalyst will generally be the most
refined configuration.
A non-resonated turbo-back system with a de-cat pipe will be considerably louder
and may produce noticeable drone at certain RPMs.
Is the AIRTEC tubular exhaust manifold worthwhile?
The
AIRTEC tubular exhaust manifold
is not normally worthwhile on an otherwise standard-turbo Fiesta ST180.
We mainly recommend it for hybrid-turbo and higher-power builds, where the
improved manifold design can make a noticeable difference to turbo response and
top-end performance.
For a normal Stage 1 or Stage 2 stock-turbo car, the available budget is usually
better spent on the intercooler, downpipe, exhaust and ECU calibration first.
Are Fiesta ST180 downpipes difficult to fit?
Professional installation is strongly recommended when fitting a downpipe to the
Fiesta ST180 or ST200.
The turbo-to-downpipe bolts can seize because of age and repeated heat cycles.
They may snap during removal, which can turn a straightforward installation into
a more involved repair.
Correct sealing and alignment are also extremely important. Poor installation can
cause exhaust leaks, and there have been cases of exhaust gases entering the
cabin where the downpipe or joints have not been fitted and sealed correctly.
All gaskets, fasteners, clamps and joining surfaces should be inspected carefully
during installation and replaced where necessary.
Do these exhausts fit both the Fiesta ST180 and ST200?
The exhaust systems within this collection are suitable for both the MK7 Fiesta
ST180 and ST200 where stated in the individual product listing.
Always check the product description and selected options before ordering,
particularly when choosing pipe diameter, resonated or non-resonated
configuration, tailpipe style and sports-cat or de-cat options.
