MK4 Focus ST Tuning Guide — Stage 1, Stage 1+ & Stage 2
The MK4 Focus ST was the last performance Ford sold in Europe — and it went out on a high. Powered by a revised version of the 2.3 EcoBoost engine that also served in the Focus RS and Mustang, with Ford's first-ever electronic limited-slip differential on a front-wheel-drive car, the MK4 ST is widely regarded as one of the best hot hatches of its generation. It's a brilliant car from the factory, and it responds to tuning extremely well.
Ford quotes 280PS (276bhp) and 420Nm (310ft/lb), with 0–62mph in 5.7 seconds. The 2.3 EcoBoost is a proven, robust engine — timing chain driven, with a forged crankshaft and a revised cylinder block that addresses the head gasket issues seen on the earlier Focus RS. It's a platform that can handle significantly more power than Ford deliver from the factory.
Available as both hatchback and estate, with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the MK4 ST has a huge and passionate aftermarket community. This guide covers three stages of tune, from a fully road-legal Stage 1 all the way to a full Stage 2 with GPF removal.

The 2.3 EcoBoost EngineRS and Mustang DNA — revised and improved
The 2.3 EcoBoost in the MK4 ST shares its architecture with the Focus RS and Mustang EcoBoost, but with important revisions. The cylinder block has been redesigned with better head gasket contact area — the problematic machined slots between cylinders that caused the RS's well-documented head gasket failures have been eliminated. The MK4 ST does not share this issue.
The engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger with an electronic wastegate actuator for precise boost control. Ford's anti-lag system keeps the turbo spooled after throttle lift-off, maintaining boost through gear changes and giving the car noticeably sharper throttle response than a conventional turbo setup. The timing is chain-driven — no belt to worry about — and the crankshaft is forged steel.
The engine management gives us extensive control over boost pressure, ignition timing, fuelling, wastegate duty cycle and cam timing. Combined with Ford's eLSD, which intelligently distributes torque across the front axle under acceleration, the MK4 ST deploys its power with a precision that earlier front-wheel-drive Fords simply couldn't match.
Like all direct-injection engines, the 2.3 EcoBoost is susceptible to carbon buildup on the intake valves over time. More on this in the maintenance section below.
Stage 1 — 335–345bhpRemap only — no hardware required, GPF stays in place
Stage 1 is a remap only — no hardware changes are required and the GPF stays in place. With a full recalibration of boost pressure, ignition timing, fuelling and wastegate control, we extract 335–345bhp and 340–355ft/lb from the standard turbocharger. That's approximately 60–70bhp over Ford's quoted figure on a completely standard car.
The factory 280PS calibration is conservative — there's significant headroom in the ECU that Ford left on the table. A Stage 1 remap transforms the way the car delivers power — sharper throttle response, faster spool, stronger mid-range torque and a harder-hitting top end. The eLSD puts the extra power down with real precision, and the anti-lag system keeps the turbo working between shifts.
Even at Stage 1, we strongly recommend upgrading the clutch. The stock unit is known to slip under the increased torque — it's the most common issue on tuned MK4 STs and something every owner should address proactively.

Stage 1+ — 360–370bhpRoad-legal maximum — intercooler + intake, GPF stays in place
Stage 1+ is the maximum we can safely extract from the MK4 Focus ST while keeping the car fully road legal. By pairing our Stage 1+ calibration with an upgraded intercooler and performance intake, we deliver 360–370bhp and 370–385ft/lb — all with the factory GPF and catalyst still in place.
The stock intercooler is the single biggest limiting factor on the MK4 ST. It heat-soaks aggressively — after just a few hard pulls, the ECU starts dialling back power to protect the engine from excessive intake temps. This makes the car feel inconsistent, especially on warmer days or during any kind of repeated hard use. An upgraded intercooler solves this completely, keeping temps consistent and allowing us to run a more aggressive calibration with confidence.
The intake upgrade improves airflow into the turbo, letting it spool more efficiently and sustain boost through the rev range. For the majority of owners, Stage 1+ is the sweet spot — serious performance, fully road legal, and the car drives consistently every time you put your foot down.

Choosing Your IntakeTwo options — same performance, different character
We stock two Airtec intake options for the MK4 Focus ST. Both perform identically in our experience — the choice comes down to sound and aesthetics.
Airtec Enclosed Induction Kit: A sealed airbox design that draws cold air from the front of the engine bay. Quieter under normal driving with a more subtle induction noise under boost. The sensible choice if you want performance without the extra noise.
Airtec Open Cone Induction Kit: An open cone filter that's more exposed to the engine bay. Significantly more turbo noise — you hear the 2.3 EcoBoost's turbo spool and flutter much more clearly. If you want the car to sound as good as it goes, this is the one.
Stage 2 — 370–385bhpGPF removal + intercooler + intake required
Stage 2 pushes the factory turbocharger to its safe limit. With the GPF and catalytic converter removed via a performance downpipe, and supported by an upgraded intercooler and intake, we extract 370–385bhp and 385–400ft/lb — the maximum the stock turbo can reliably deliver.
Removing the GPF and cat frees the turbo to breathe more efficiently at the top of the rev range and gives us more freedom with the calibration. The difference over Stage 1+ is most noticeable in top-end pull and exhaust character — a decat downpipe transforms the way the car sounds and gives the 2.3 EcoBoost a much more aggressive note under load.

Exhaust UpgradesGPF-back, cat-back and turbo-back options
The MK4 Focus ST is quiet from the factory, and there are three levels of exhaust upgrade depending on how far you want to go.
GPF-back: Replaces the rear section after the GPF. The GPF and catalyst stay in place — fully road legal and MOT compliant. Transforms the sound without touching any emissions hardware. A popular upgrade at any stage.
Cat-back: Replaces everything from the catalytic converter backwards, including the GPF. This removes the GPF, so it is not road legal — off-road / motorsport use only. A significant step up in sound and flow over the GPF-back.
Turbo-back: Replaces the entire exhaust from the turbo outlet backwards. The full system for Stage 2 cars — maximum flow, maximum sound. Off-road / motorsport use only.
Exhaust fitment differs between the hatchback and estate, so make sure you select the correct version for your car. We stock Cobra Sport systems for both bodystyles.
Improving HandlingGet the chassis to match the power
The MK4 ST has an excellent chassis from the factory — the eLSD, revised suspension geometry and sharp steering make it one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars ever made. But once you're pushing 350bhp+, a set of quality adjustable coilovers lets you dial in the handling to suit your driving style and tighten up body control under hard cornering.
Keeping Your MK4 ST HealthyMaintenance tips for tuned 2.3 EcoBoost engines
The 2.3 EcoBoost in the MK4 ST is a robust, well-proven engine — it's used across the Focus RS, Mustang, Ranger and Bronco globally. But like any high-performance turbocharged engine, it benefits from proper maintenance when tuned.
Clutch: We can't stress this enough — the stock clutch is the weakest link on a tuned MK4 ST. Even at Stage 1, the increased torque can cause slip. If you're remapping, budget for the clutch at the same time. Our genuine Ford RS clutch upgrade kit is a direct bolt-on and solves the problem completely.
Intercooler heat soak: The stock intercooler is barely adequate even at stock power levels. After a few hard pulls it heat-soaks badly and the ECU starts pulling power. Even if you're staying at Stage 1, an intercooler upgrade makes the car significantly more consistent — we'd consider it a strongly recommended upgrade at any power level.
Carbon buildup: The 2.3 EcoBoost is a direct-injection engine, meaning fuel doesn't wash over the intake valves. Over time, carbon deposits build up and can cause rough idle, reduced performance and misfires. A walnut blast clean every 30,000–40,000 miles is good preventative maintenance.
Oil: Use a quality fully synthetic 5W-30. Ford's service intervals are too generous for a tuned car — we recommend changing oil every 5,000–7,500 miles.
Servicing: We stock a genuine Ford service kit for the MK4 ST — Castrol 0W-30 oil, genuine Ford oil filter and sump plug gasket, with options to add spark plugs, cabin filter and air filter. Everything you need for a proper service in one box.
Spark plugs: The factory plugs can misfire under increased boost. We recommend uprated NGK iridium plugs, especially at Stage 2 and above. Replace every 15,000–20,000 miles on a tuned car.
Oil cooler: For cars doing regular track use or sustained hard driving, an oil cooler keeps engine oil temps under control and prevents the ECU from pulling power to protect itself.
Fuel: Always run 99 RON — Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum. The 2.3 EcoBoost uses an inferred octane system that actively adjusts timing and boost based on fuel quality. Better fuel means more power, cleaner combustion and reduced LSPI risk.
