How much torque can the standard MK2 Focus RS clutch handle?
The standard MK2 Focus RS clutch is a very capable factory setup.
In our experience, it can comfortably handle approximately 430–440 lb-ft, which is around the sensible upper torque level we would recommend for a standard-internal MK2 Focus RS engine anyway.
For the majority of standard-turbo and normally tuned road cars, there is therefore no need to replace a healthy original RS clutch simply because the car has been remapped.
Once the target moves beyond approximately 430–440 lb-ft, we would start looking at a genuinely uprated aftermarket clutch.
The standard clutch may physically hold more torque than this, but its lifespan can be considerably reduced as clamping-load requirements increase.
Best clutch for most MK2 Focus RS road cars
For around 90% of MK2 Focus RS clutch replacements, our preferred option is the complete LuK MK2 Focus RS clutch and flywheel kit.
It provides a complete factory-style replacement including:
- Clutch friction plate
- Pressure plate
- Dual-mass flywheel
- Slave cylinder
- New flywheel bolts
This allows the major clutch components to be renewed in one job rather than paying the significant gearbox-removal labour again if an older component fails shortly afterwards.
Is LuK the original MK2 Focus RS clutch manufacturer?
Yes. LuK is the OEM manufacturer of the original clutch and dual-mass flywheel used on the MK2 Focus RS.
The Genuine Ford components are essentially LuK parts supplied through Ford branding.
For that reason, we are perfectly happy recommending the LuK components when an owner wants to retain the factory RS clutch characteristics.
The LuK three-piece MK2 Focus RS clutch kit is suitable when the existing flywheel is genuinely in excellent condition, while the Genuine Ford three-piece clutch kit provides the equivalent Ford-branded replacement option.
Three-piece clutch kit or complete clutch and flywheel kit?
For most cars of this age, we recommend replacing the complete clutch and flywheel assembly.
Removing the gearbox represents a substantial part of the labour involved in a clutch replacement. Saving money by retaining an old flywheel or slave cylinder can therefore become false economy if one of those parts fails shortly afterwards.
Three-piece clutch kit
A three-piece kit can make sense when:
- The existing flywheel is relatively new.
- There has been absolutely no clutch slip.
- The flywheel has been correctly inspected and is within specification.
- There is a known history of recent flywheel replacement.
Complete clutch and flywheel kit
We would choose the complete kit when:
- The flywheel is original or high mileage.
- The clutch has slipped.
- The vehicle's clutch history is unknown.
- You want to minimise the chance of paying for gearbox removal again.
This is why the complete LuK package is our recommendation for the vast majority of cars.
Should the flywheel be replaced with the clutch?
In most cases, yes.
The LuK dual-mass flywheel is designed as the correct factory-style replacement for the MK2 Focus RS.
Replacing it at the same time is particularly important if the clutch has slipped.
Why does clutch slip damage the flywheel?
When a clutch slips under load, considerable heat is generated between the clutch friction material and flywheel surface.
This can glaze the flywheel friction face.
Installing a new clutch against a badly glazed or heat-damaged flywheel can compromise the new clutch from the beginning.
For that reason, if the clutch has been slipping, we would replace the flywheel rather than simply fitting a new friction plate and pressure plate.
Signs of a worn dual-mass flywheel
A worn dual-mass flywheel can produce symptoms including:
- Rattling or excessive drivetrain noise
- Vibration at idle
- Judder when pulling away
- Excessive rotational or lateral movement in the flywheel
- Noise when starting or switching the engine off
However, even a flywheel that is not obviously noisy should be carefully inspected when the clutch is removed.
Dual-mass versus single-mass flywheel
For the vast majority of road-going MK2 Focus RS builds, we prefer to retain the original dual-mass flywheel design.
The dual-mass flywheel helps isolate vibration and torsional movement from the gearbox and cabin.
Compared with many single-mass conversions, it provides:
- Less gearbox chatter
- Less vibration
- Less drivetrain noise
- Smoother low-speed driving
- Better everyday refinement
A single-mass flywheel may have a place in a purpose-built competition car, but for a normal fast-road RS there is very little reason to sacrifice the drivability of the factory dual-mass arrangement.
Should the slave cylinder be replaced with the clutch?
Yes. We always advise replacing the slave cylinder while the gearbox is removed.
The Sachs OE slave cylinder is relatively inexpensive compared with the labour involved in accessing it.
If the old slave cylinder fails after a new clutch has been installed, the gearbox may need to be removed again simply to replace the slave cylinder.
For that reason, retaining an old slave cylinder generally does not make economic sense when the clutch is already apart.
Do the flywheel bolts need replacing?
Yes.
The flywheel bolts are single-use stretch bolts and should be replaced once removed.
Do not reuse the original bolts simply because they appear visually undamaged.
The standalone LuK dual-mass flywheel is supplied with replacement bolts, as is the complete LuK clutch and flywheel kit.
What else should be replaced during a clutch job?
Because access is already available, we would consider carrying out several supporting maintenance jobs at the same time.
Gearbox oil
A clutch replacement is an ideal opportunity to refill the gearbox with fresh oil, particularly if the existing fluid has been in the car for several years.
Driveshaft seals
The driveshafts have to be disturbed during gearbox removal.
Older driveshaft seals can begin leaking after being disturbed, so replacing the seals while access is available is sensible preventative maintenance.
Slave cylinder
As above, we would replace this every time unless there were exceptional circumstances.
Flywheel bolts
These must be replaced rather than reused.
How do I know if my Focus RS clutch is slipping?
Clutch slip usually becomes most obvious under high engine load.
A common test is to accelerate hard in a high gear, such as fifth or sixth, from relatively low engine speed.
If the engine speed suddenly rises without a matching increase in road speed, the clutch is slipping.
Other signs can include:
- A rising biting point
- Clutch smell after hard acceleration
- Slip becoming worse once the car is hot
- Difficulty transmitting full torque in higher gears
Once a clutch has started slipping under boost, we would avoid repeatedly testing it because every slip event creates additional heat at the clutch and flywheel surfaces.
When does an MK2 Focus RS need an uprated clutch?
For a road car, we would normally remain with the factory RS clutch arrangement up to around 430–440 lb-ft.
Above this, an uprated clutch becomes the sensible option.
A more aggressive clutch may also be worthwhile on cars used for:
- Repeated track driving
- Drag racing
- Very aggressive launches
- High-torque hybrid turbo builds
- Big-turbo conversions
The correct clutch should be selected around torque rather than horsepower alone.
A 450 bhp engine producing a very aggressive torque curve can be considerably harder on the clutch than another engine producing similar peak horsepower with more progressive torque delivery.
MK2 Focus RS driveshafts
The MK2 Focus RS driveshafts are not something we consider a particularly common failure point, but they can wear or become damaged with age.
The Genuine Ford MK2 Focus RS driveshaft provides the correct OEM replacement when required.
Possible driveshaft or CV-joint symptoms include:
- Clicking while driving
- Clicking or knocking when steering
- Vibration or wobble under acceleration
- Excessive play in a CV joint
- Grease escaping from a damaged CV boot
The cause should be properly diagnosed before replacing the complete shaft because similar vibration can also come from wheels, tyres, bearings or suspension components.
Damaged CV boot – boot or complete driveshaft?
The Genuine Ford Focus RS front inner CV boot kit can save the original joint if a damaged boot is caught early enough.
A split boot allows grease to escape and dirt and water to enter the CV joint.
Replace the boot if:
- The split has been caught early.
- The joint remains smooth and quiet.
- There is no excessive joint play.
- Contamination has not caused visible damage.
Consider replacing the joint or driveshaft if:
- The joint is already clicking.
- There is excessive play.
- The car vibrates under acceleration.
- The boot has been split for a long period.
- Dirt or water has damaged the joint surfaces.
Replacing a boot cannot repair a CV joint that has already been damaged internally.
AIRTEC gearbox torque mount
The AIRTEC Motorsport gearbox torque mount reduces movement of the engine and gearbox under hard acceleration.
This can help:
- Reduce wheel hop
- Reduce drivetrain movement
- Make gear changes feel more direct
- Improve drivetrain control under hard acceleration
Yellow bush – road use
The yellow bush is our preferred option for a normal road-driven RS.
It reduces excess movement while keeping additional vibration and noise relatively low.
Purple bush – fast road and track
The purple bush is considerably firmer and is more appropriate for modified fast-road cars or vehicles seeing track use.
Expect some increase in noise and vibration compared with the yellow option.
Black Series – track and competition
The Black Series bush is the firmest choice and is aimed at serious track, motorsport or very hard fast-road use.
It provides maximum drivetrain control but sacrifices considerably more refinement.

Standard car
Retain the original RS clutch while it remains healthy.
Tuned standard-turbo car
The standard LuK RS clutch arrangement remains an excellent choice provided torque remains around or below 430–440 lb-ft.
If replacement is required, we would normally install the complete LuK clutch, flywheel and slave-cylinder package.
Maximum standard-engine / high-torque build
Once torque begins exceeding approximately 430–440 lb-ft, we would move to a properly uprated clutch rather than relying on the standard RS unit.
Forged hybrid or big-turbo build
Choose the clutch specifically around the expected torque output and intended use of the car.
Higher clamping-force and performance friction materials may be required, particularly for competition use.
