AIRTEC uses 76mm pipework throughout, together with a large cotton filter mounted to an 80mm aluminium trumpet.

Open-cone versus enclosed airbox
Choose an open-cone intake if:
- You want more audible turbo spool.
- You want more induction and recirculation-valve noise.
- You want the best performance-to-price ratio.
- You prefer the appearance of exposed aluminium pipework and a large filter.
Choose the carbon airbox if:
- You want a more discreet intake sound.
- You prefer an enclosed filter.
- You want the carbon-fibre engine-bay appearance.
- Price is less important than finish and presentation.
There is no need to choose the enclosed system purely because of concerns about heat soak.
Do open-cone intakes suffer from heat soak?
We have not experienced a significant heat-soak issue with the open-cone systems on the MK2 Focus RS.
In our dyno testing, open-cone setups have been able to complete multiple back-to-back runs with very little performance drop-off attributable to the intake itself.
For that reason, we would not avoid an open-cone intake simply because the filter is exposed within the engine bay.
The condition of the intercooler and the overall cooling system will generally have a much greater effect on repeated tuned-car performance.
Wisbech Engineering V3 induction kit
The Wisbech Engineering V3 induction kit is another strong open-cone option.
In terms of sound and outright performance, there is very little to separate it from the AIRTEC 76mm system.
The choice will largely come down to:
- Which design you prefer
- Engine-bay appearance
- Brand preference
- Available finish and filter options
The V3 system relocates the MAF sensor into the rear of the pipework for a cleaner appearance and includes the required MAF extension and intake fittings.
For the MK2 Focus RS, an additional RS vacuum-pipe kit is not required.
AIRTEC 76mm versus Wisbech V3
There is no major performance difference between these two systems in normal applications.
Both provide:
- Improved airflow
- Strong induction sound
- Increased turbo noise
- A more purposeful engine-bay appearance
- Enough airflow for common tuned RS setups
We generally favour the AIRTEC 76mm because it represents excellent value and is a simple, proven solution, but either is a good choice.
Does an induction kit need a remap?
No. The normal MAF-equipped induction kits can be installed on a standard ECU without causing running problems or an engine-management light when fitted correctly.
A remap is not required simply to install the intake.
However, ECU tuning is recommended if the objective is to make full use of the additional airflow and achieve the largest potential performance improvement.
How much power can an induction kit add?
The exact gain depends heavily on the vehicle specification and tune.
On a standard car, the most noticeable benefits may be:
- More turbo sound
- Improved induction noise
- Improved throttle response
- Reduced intake restriction
On a tuned car where the original intake is becoming a restriction, a larger intake can contribute more significantly to peak and mid-range performance.
AIRTEC quotes approximately 10–20 bhp for its Stage 2 carbon system depending on specification. Treat this as a manufacturer figure rather than a guaranteed gain on every vehicle.
When is the AIRTEC 90mm intake required?
The AIRTEC 90mm induction system is a specialist product for heavily modified cars.
It is not simply a larger version of the 76mm intake that should be fitted to every high-power road car.
The 90mm system does not have provision for the factory MAF sensor and therefore cannot be used with the standard Ford ECU strategy.
It is intended for cars using an aftermarket ECU configuration that does not rely on the original MAF sensor, such as:
- Syvecs
- ECU Master
- SCS Delta
- Comparable correctly configured aftermarket engine-management systems
For a normal standard-turbo or hybrid-turbo RS running the standard ECU, use the 76mm intake instead.
Is the 90mm intake better than the 76mm?
Not for the vast majority of MK2 Focus RS builds.
The 76mm kit already provides enough airflow for the standard RS turbo and common hybrid-turbo setups while retaining the factory MAF-based ECU system.
The 90mm version only becomes relevant where the vehicle specification and aftermarket ECU genuinely justify removing the MAF restriction and increasing the intake diameter further.
Bigger is not automatically better. Fit the intake that matches the actual turbocharger, ECU and power target.
AIRTEC alloy inlet manifold
The AIRTEC alloy inlet manifold is one of the more worthwhile intake-side upgrades on a tuned MK2 Focus RS.
There are two reasons to consider it:
Improved airflow
The AIRTEC manifold is designed to improve airflow compared with the original plastic manifold.
AIRTEC quotes approximately:
- 5–10 bhp peak gain
- 20–40 lb-ft torque improvement depending on setup
- Up to 25 bhp improvement in parts of the mid-range during its own testing
These are manufacturer test figures and will vary significantly according to the engine specification and ECU calibration.
Replacing the original plastic manifold
The more important consideration on a tuned RS is durability.
The original plastic inlet manifold can fail, particularly on cars running increased boost pressure. Because the RS operates at higher boost than the equivalent ST models, the manifold is subjected to more load.
If the plastic manifold fails under boost, the damage can be substantial. In severe cases, components can be forced upwards and damage surrounding engine-bay parts, including the bonnet.
The AIRTEC replacement uses an alloy construction and is pressure tested by the manufacturer, making it a worthwhile preventative and performance upgrade for a modified RS.
Is the inlet manifold worthwhile on a standard car?
It can be fitted to a standard car, but we would prioritise it more highly on a tuned vehicle.
As boost and airflow increase, both the performance benefit and the reason for replacing the original plastic manifold become more relevant.
For an otherwise standard road car, an induction kit is the more obvious first intake modification.
AIRTEC ECU holder
The AIRTEC two-piece ECU holder is a supporting installation component rather than a performance upgrade.
Larger open-cone induction systems can require the original ECU arrangement to be repositioned or tidied. The ECU holder provides a secure and cleaner mounting solution when installing compatible intake systems.
There is no performance reason to fit it by itself; it is simply useful where required by the induction-kit installation.
How often should the induction filter be cleaned?
We recommend inspecting and cleaning the performance air filter approximately once a year.
For a dry filter that is suitable for this cleaning method:
- Remove the filter.
- Blow loose dirt out from the clean side towards the dirty side.
- Use sensible airline pressure rather than placing a high-pressure nozzle directly against the filter material.
- Inspect the filter for damage before refitting.
The exact cleaning method should still follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions, particularly where an oiled filter element is used.
How often should the filter be replaced?
As a general rule, we would consider replacing an induction filter approximately every three to four years, depending on condition and use.
Replace it sooner if:
- The filter material is damaged.
- It is heavily contaminated and cannot be cleaned effectively.
- The rubber mounting section is deteriorating.
- The vehicle is used regularly in particularly dusty or dirty environments.
