Quick recommendations

  • Routine servicing: Every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.
  • Road-use oil: Castrol Edge Professional 0W-40 for standard and tuned cars.
  • Regular hard/track use: Consider moving to a suitable 5W-40 oil.
  • Spark plugs: Bosch RS plugs are suitable for standard, Stage 1 and Stage 2 cars.
  • Tuned plug gap: Approximately 0.65–0.70mm.
  • Spark-plug interval: Every two years on a standard car; yearly on a tuned car.
  • Cambelt: Ford's official interval is 125,000 miles or 10 years; we prefer approximately 80,000 miles or 8 years as preventative maintenance.
  • During a cambelt change: Replace the tensioner, water pump and auxiliary belts at the same time.
  • Gearbox oil: Every three years.
  • Air and cabin filters: Every two years.

How often should an MK2 Focus RS be serviced?

Ford's original service interval for the MK2 Focus RS is 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first.

For cars we look after today, we prefer a slightly shorter interval of 12 months or 10,000 miles.

We recommend this for both standard and tuned cars.

The MK2 RS is now an older performance car, and many examples are driven relatively hard, modified or cover low annual mileage. Regular servicing gives an opportunity not only to change the engine oil but also to inspect ageing cooling, ignition and auxiliary components before they cause problems.

What oil should I use in an MK2 Focus RS?

For normal road use, our preferred oil is Castrol Edge Professional 0W-40.

It is suitable for both standard and tuned road-going MK2 Focus RS models and is the oil supplied with our MK2 Focus ST and RS service kit.

For a car seeing repeated hard track use, a suitable 5W-40 can be worthwhile because the slightly thicker hot viscosity provides additional protection when oil temperatures remain elevated for sustained periods.

0W-40 or 5W-40?

For most cars:

  • Road use: 0W-40
  • Tuned road use: 0W-40
  • Regular hard track use: Consider 5W-40

There is no reason to move to a heavier oil purely because the ECU has been remapped if the car is predominantly road driven.

MK2 Focus RS spark plugs

The Bosch MK2 Focus RS spark plugs are an excellent choice for these engines.

We are happy using them on:

  • Standard MK2 Focus RS models
  • Stage 1 cars
  • Stage 2 cars
  • Cars running close to the limits of the standard turbo

There is no requirement to fit an unnecessarily exotic spark plug simply because the vehicle has been tuned.

What spark-plug gap should a tuned MK2 Focus RS use?

For a tuned car, we normally use a plug gap of approximately 0.65–0.70mm.

Reducing the gap slightly can help the ignition system maintain a strong spark as cylinder pressure increases under higher boost.

An excessively large gap can contribute to misfires under load, particularly as ignition components age.

How often should the spark plugs be changed?

Standard car

On a standard road car, changing the spark plugs approximately every two years is reasonable.

Tuned car

On a tuned MK2 RS, we recommend changing them every year.

Plugs are relatively inexpensive and their condition can have a noticeable effect on how smoothly a highly boosted engine performs.

MK2 Focus RS ignition coils

Ageing ignition coils are now a fairly common cause of misfires on the MK2 Focus RS.

The Bosch ignition coils are our preferred replacement.

Bosch manufactured the original Ford coil packs, so these provide the correct OE-quality component without paying extra simply for Ford packaging.

Common symptoms of a weak coil can include:

  • Misfires under boost
  • Hesitation under load
  • Rough running
  • Engine-management warnings

Always diagnose a misfire properly rather than replacing coils at random, as worn plugs, injector issues and boost leaks can produce similar symptoms.

MK2 Focus RS cambelt replacement interval

The official Ford replacement interval for the MK2 Focus RS cambelt is 125,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

However, we prefer a more conservative approach on these cars.

For preventative maintenance, we would aim to replace the cambelt at approximately 80,000 miles or 8 years, particularly where the car is tuned, frequently driven hard or its maintenance history is unclear.

Given the age of every MK2 Focus RS now, any car still running its original cambelt is already well beyond the age limit and should have it replaced.

Why change the cambelt early?

A cambelt failure can cause extensive internal engine damage.

The official interval represents Ford's original maximum scheduled replacement point, but age, heat cycles, contamination and hard use can all affect belt and tensioner condition.

These are now valuable performance cars, so we consider a more preventative replacement schedule worthwhile rather than trying to extract the absolute maximum life from a relatively inexpensive belt system.

What should be changed with the cambelt?

We would not replace the cambelt alone.

When carrying out the job, we recommend replacing:

  • Cambelt
  • Tensioner and associated timing-belt components
  • Water pump
  • Auxiliary drive belts
  • Coolant as required during the job

The Genuine Ford MK2 Focus ST & RS cambelt and water-pump kit is our preferred complete solution.

Should the cambelt tensioner be replaced?

Yes.

The tensioner is just as important as the belt itself. A failed tensioner can cause the belt to lose tension or timing, potentially resulting in the same serious engine damage as a failed cambelt.

If required separately, we stock the Genuine Ford cambelt and tensioner kit.

For a complete belt replacement, however, we would normally replace all of the relevant components together.

Should the water pump be changed with the cambelt?

Yes. We recommend replacing the water pump while carrying out the cambelt.

Water-pump leakage is fairly common on the 2.5-litre engine. The gasket at the rear of the pump can begin leaking as the assembly ages.

Because much of the labour overlaps with cambelt replacement, retaining an old water pump during a belt job can be false economy.

The Genuine Ford MK2 Focus ST & RS water pump is also available separately.

Should the auxiliary belts be changed with the cambelt?

Yes.

We advise fitting a fresh Genuine Ford MK2 Focus ST & RS auxiliary-belt set while carrying out the cambelt service.

The additional parts cost is relatively small and prevents leaving old, hardened drive belts in place immediately after carrying out a major preventative-maintenance job.

Common MK2 Focus RS coolant leaks

Cooling-system condition is particularly important on a tuned turbocharged engine.

Two areas we regularly consider on the 2.5-litre engine are the water pump and thermostat housing.

Water pump

The rear seal or gasket around the water pump can leak as the assembly ages.

Signs can include:

  • Gradually falling coolant level
  • Visible coolant staining
  • Coolant smell after driving
  • Evidence of leakage around the pump area

Thermostat housing

The thermostat housing is another common coolant-leak point on these engines.

If leakage is found, we recommend replacing it with the correct Genuine Ford MK2 Focus ST & RS thermostat housing.

Do not ignore a small coolant leak simply because the car is not currently overheating. Loss of coolant can become progressively worse and can eventually lead to much more serious problems.

MK2 Focus RS alternator problems

Alternator failure is a common age-related issue on the MK2 Focus RS.

Typical symptoms can include:

  • Battery or charging warning light
  • Low charging voltage
  • Battery repeatedly becoming flat
  • Electrical systems behaving incorrectly as system voltage drops

The Denso 150A alternator for the MK2 Focus ST & RS is a brand-new replacement unit rather than a remanufactured alternator.

Denso is a high-quality OE-level manufacturer and this is our preferred replacement when the original alternator has failed.

Air-filter replacement interval

For a normal road-driven car, changing the air filter approximately every two years is reasonable.

An aftermarket reusable performance filter should instead be inspected and cleaned according to its manufacturer's instructions.

Cars operating in particularly dusty conditions may require more frequent attention.

Cabin-filter replacement interval

We also recommend replacing the cabin or pollen filter approximately every two years.

A heavily contaminated filter can reduce ventilation airflow and contribute to unpleasant smells or poor demisting performance.

How often should MK2 Focus RS gearbox oil be changed?

We recommend changing the manual gearbox oil approximately every three years.

Ford may not have treated this as an especially frequent routine-service item when the vehicle was new, but these gearboxes are now well over a decade old and many cars have been tuned or used hard.

Fresh gearbox oil is inexpensive preventative maintenance for a transmission that is considerably more expensive to replace.

Standard versus tuned MK2 Focus RS servicing

The core maintenance requirements are fundamentally the same, but tuned cars benefit from closer attention to wear items.

Standard road car

  • Engine oil and service every 12 months / 10,000 miles
  • Spark plugs approximately every two years
  • Air filter every two years
  • Cabin filter every two years
  • Gearbox oil every three years
  • Cambelt approximately every 80,000 miles / 8 years as preventative maintenance

Tuned road car

  • Engine oil and service every 12 months / 10,000 miles
  • Spark plugs every year
  • Plug gap approximately 0.65–0.70mm
  • Regular ignition-system inspection
  • Regular cooling-system inspection
  • Air and cabin filters every two years
  • Gearbox oil every three years
  • Cambelt approximately every 80,000 miles / 8 years or sooner where use is particularly demanding

Regular track use

Track use places substantially more heat and load into the engine, cooling system, gearbox and brakes.

For cars used regularly on circuit, service intervals should be adapted around actual use rather than waiting for the normal road mileage interval.

We would also consider a suitable 5W-40 engine oil for repeated hard track work.

Buying an older MK2 Focus RS – what maintenance should I check?

With cars of this age, documented maintenance history is extremely important.

We would specifically look for evidence of:

  • Regular annual oil changes
  • Cambelt replacement
  • Water-pump replacement
  • Auxiliary-belt replacement
  • Recent spark plugs
  • Gearbox-oil changes
  • Cooling-system repairs
  • Ignition-coil replacement where required
  • Alternator replacement if the original has failed

If there is no evidence that an age-critical item has been completed, we would generally assume it has not been done rather than relying on a seller's memory.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ford's service interval for the MK2 Focus RS?

Ford's original interval is 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first.

How often does Wayside recommend servicing one?

We recommend every 12 months or 10,000 miles for both standard and tuned cars.

What engine oil should I use?

Castrol Edge Professional 0W-40 is our preferred oil for standard and tuned road-going cars.

Should I use 5W-40 on a tuned car?

Not simply because the car is tuned. We would mainly consider 5W-40 for regular hard or track use where oil temperatures remain elevated.

Which spark plugs should I use?

The Bosch RS spark plugs are excellent for standard, Stage 1 and Stage 2 cars.

What plug gap should I use?

Approximately 0.65–0.70mm is our normal recommendation for a tuned car.

How often should the plugs be changed?

Approximately every two years on a standard car and every year on a tuned car.

Are Bosch ignition coils the same quality as Ford coils?

Yes. Bosch manufactures the original-style Ford ignition coils, making the Bosch-branded units an excellent OE replacement.

What is Ford's official MK2 Focus RS cambelt interval?

125,000 miles or 10 years, whichever comes first.

Why do you recommend doing the cambelt earlier?

We prefer approximately 80,000 miles or 8 years as preventative maintenance because these are now ageing performance cars and the consequences of timing-belt failure can be extremely expensive.

Should the water pump be changed with the cambelt?

Yes. Water pumps are known to leak and much of the labour overlaps, so we recommend replacing it during the cambelt job.

Should the tensioner be replaced?

Yes. Never fit a new cambelt while retaining an old timing-belt tensioner.

Should the auxiliary belts be changed too?

Yes. We would replace them while carrying out the cambelt service.

Is the thermostat housing a common problem?

Yes. Coolant leakage from the thermostat housing is a common age-related problem on the 2.5-litre engine.

Are alternators common for failing?

Yes. Alternator failure is now a relatively common age-related issue on MK2 Focus ST and RS models.

How often should the gearbox oil be changed?

We recommend approximately every three years.

Are the service intervals the same across all MK2 Focus RS years?

Yes. These recommendations apply across the MK2 Focus RS model range.
