What is the best first suspension upgrade for the MK2 Focus RS?

The Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs are our recommended first suspension modification for a road-driven MK2 Focus RS.

They provide a good combination of:

  • A more aggressive stance
  • Improved handling
  • Reduced body movement
  • Retention of the original RS dampers
  • Reasonable everyday ride quality

The Eibach kit lowers the car by approximately 25mm at the front and 15mm at the rear.

The ride becomes noticeably firmer than standard, but with healthy original dampers it remains more than usable on a day-to-day road car.

Do Eibach springs work with the standard RS dampers?

Yes. The Eibach springs work very well with the original MK2 Focus RS shock absorbers when the dampers are still in good condition.

This makes them particularly suitable for owners who want a noticeable improvement in stance and handling without replacing the entire suspension system.

Before fitting lowering springs, inspect the existing dampers for:

  • Fluid leakage
  • Excessive bouncing
  • Poor body control
  • Knocking or abnormal suspension noise

There is little benefit in fitting uprated springs to badly worn shock absorbers.

How does the Eibach Pro-Kit affect ride quality?

The Eibach setup is noticeably firmer than the factory RS suspension.

You will feel more of the road surface, particularly over broken or uneven tarmac, but the trade-off is improved control and a more direct response through corners.

For a normal road and fast-road RS, we think the balance remains very usable.

If maximum ride comfort is the priority, retain the standard springs. If improved handling and stance are more important, the Eibach kit is a worthwhile compromise.

Eibach springs versus BC Racing coilovers

The choice depends on how much adjustment and ultimate handling performance you want.

Choose Eibach springs if:

  • The car is mainly road driven.
  • You want a simple and relatively affordable suspension upgrade.
  • You want to retain healthy original RS dampers.
  • You want improved stance without extensive setup work.
  • You still want reasonable everyday comfort.

Choose BC Racing coilovers if:

  • You want substantially greater suspension adjustment.
  • Fast-road or track performance is the priority.
  • You want to choose your own ride height.
  • You want adjustable damping.
  • You are prepared to spend more time setting the car up correctly.

If the budget allows, the BC Racing setup provides a considerably higher level of suspension control and adjustment.

BC Racing coilovers for the MK2 Focus RS

The BC Racing coilovers for the MK2 Focus RS replace the original springs and dampers with a complete adjustable suspension system.

The main advantage is the ability to tune the suspension around how the vehicle is actually used.

The damping can be adjusted from a relatively compliant road setup through to a much firmer and more track-focused configuration.

This means the BC setup can be configured to ride softer than the original RS suspension at one end of its adjustment range, while also being capable of a considerably firmer setting when maximum body control is required.

Best suspension for fast-road use

For fast-road use, both the Eibach springs and BC Racing coilovers are good options.

Eibach setup

Choose the Eibach springs if you want:

  • A straightforward installation
  • Improved handling and stance
  • To retain the original dampers
  • A lower overall cost

BC Racing setup

Choose the BC Racing coilovers if you want:

  • Greater handling performance
  • Adjustable damping
  • Adjustable ride height
  • More control over the overall chassis setup

If outright handling performance is the priority and the budget allows, we would choose the BC Racing coilovers.

Best suspension for track use

For regular track use, the BC Racing coilovers are our preferred setup.

The additional damping and ride-height adjustment allow the chassis to be set up much more precisely than lowering springs fitted to standard dampers.

A track-focused suspension setup should also include:

  • Four-wheel geometry
  • Inspection of all bushes and ball joints
  • Healthy wheel bearings
  • Correct tyre pressures
  • Good-quality tyres
  • Ride-height and damping settings appropriate for the circuit

Simply making the suspension as low and stiff as possible does not automatically improve handling.

Powerflex Handling Pack

The Powerflex Handling Pack is a worthwhile upgrade for owners looking for more steering feel and a more connected chassis.

The pack contains:

  • Front lower wishbone front bushes
  • Front lower wishbone rear bushes
  • Lower engine-mount insert
  • Lower engine-mount small bush

The Powerflex Road Series bushes reduce unwanted movement compared with tired original rubber components while remaining suitable for road and fast-road use.

In our experience, the handling pack noticeably:

  • Sharpens steering response
  • Makes the front end feel more direct
  • Improves the connection between the steering wheel and road
  • Reduces unwanted movement from ageing rubber bushes

Complete Powerflex pack or individual bushes?

If the car is being upgraded for handling and the budget allows, we would choose the complete Powerflex Handling Pack.

It addresses several areas at the same time and gives a more complete improvement than changing one bush alone.

If the original rear bush in the front lower wishbone has simply cracked or failed, the Powerflex front lower wishbone rear bushes can be fitted separately as a direct replacement.

These original bushes are a common wear point as the cars age.

AIRTEC gearbox torque mount

The AIRTEC gearbox torque mount reduces engine and gearbox movement under acceleration.

Its main benefits include:

  • Reduced drivetrain movement
  • Reduced wheel hop
  • More direct throttle transitions
  • More controlled movement during gear changes

Different bush stiffness options allow the mount to be matched to the intended use of the car.

Yellow bush

Our preferred choice for a normal road car. It controls movement without introducing excessive additional vibration.

Purple bush

A firmer option for harder fast-road and occasional track use where additional drivetrain control is more important than refinement.

Black bush

The firmest option and more appropriate for dedicated competition or very track-focused applications where additional noise and vibration are less important.

Genuine Ford Focus RS lower control arm

The Genuine Ford MK2 Focus RS front lower control arm is an OEM replacement part rather than a performance upgrade.

The lower-arm bushes are one of the more common suspension wear points on these cars.

Possible symptoms of worn bushes or arm components include:

  • Knocking from the front suspension
  • Vague steering
  • Movement under braking
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Poor wheel alignment

Replacing a worn arm can therefore make the car feel considerably tighter even though the new component is still standard specification.

Does a Focus ST lower arm fit the Focus RS?

No. The MK2 Focus ST lower arm should not be used as a replacement for the Focus RS arm.

This is a question we are asked regularly. The RS requires the correct RS-specific lower control arm, so make sure the part is ordered for the correct model.

MK2 Focus RS rear wheel bearing

The Genuine Ford rear wheel bearing is a standard replacement component rather than a handling upgrade.

Wheel bearings can wear as the car ages.

A failing bearing commonly produces:

  • A rumbling or droning sound while driving
  • Noise that changes with road speed
  • Movement or play at the wheel

When the car is safely raised, a badly worn bearing may allow movement when the wheel is rocked side-to-side or top-to-bottom.

Wheel-bearing play should be properly diagnosed because suspension joints and bushes can sometimes create similar movement.

Four-wheel alignment after suspension work

We recommend a proper four-wheel alignment after replacing or upgrading suspension components.

This includes:

  • Lowering springs
  • Coilovers
  • Wishbone bushes
  • Lower control arms
  • Other components that can influence wheel position or geometry

Changing ride height or replacing worn components can alter wheel alignment.

Incorrect geometry can cause:

  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Poor steering response
  • The car pulling to one side
  • Reduced stability
  • A nervous or inconsistent feel through corners

Good geometry is one of the most important final steps after carrying out suspension work.

Clubsport bolt-in rear cage

The Clubsport by AutoSpecialists bolt-in rear cage is primarily aimed at track-focused builds.

The cage adds noticeable stiffness to the rear of the chassis and creates a much more focused motorsport-style setup.

It is manufactured from FIA-spec E355+N cold-drawn seamless steel and is designed to bolt into the car without requiring drilling, cutting or welded mounting brackets.

For a track-focused RS, the additional chassis stiffness can complement a properly set-up suspension system.

For most normal road cars, however, we would prioritise springs, coilovers, bushes and geometry before fitting a cage.

Best MK2 Focus RS handling setup by use

Normal road use

Our preferred simple setup is:

  • Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs
  • Healthy standard RS dampers
  • Four-wheel alignment

This improves both stance and handling while remaining practical for daily use.

Fast-road use

For a stronger fast-road setup:

  • Eibach springs or BC Racing coilovers
  • Powerflex Handling Pack
  • AIRTEC torque mount
  • Four-wheel alignment

If budget allows, the BC Racing coilovers offer the greater overall handling potential.

Regular track use

For a more track-focused car:

  • BC Racing coilovers
  • Powerflex Handling Pack
  • Firmer AIRTEC torque mount
  • Professional geometry setup
  • Optional Clubsport rear cage

MK2 Focus RS suspension fitment

The relevant suspension and handling parts in this collection use the same fitment across MK2 Focus RS model years.

Always check the individual product listing before ordering, particularly where a component is also available for the MK2 Focus ST.

Some parts are shared between the ST and RS, but others – such as the front lower control arm – are RS-specific.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first suspension upgrade for an MK2 Focus RS?

The Eibach Pro-Kit lowering springs are our recommended first modification for a road car.

How much do Eibach springs lower the RS?

Approximately 25mm at the front and 15mm at the rear.

Are Eibach springs much firmer than standard?

They are noticeably firmer, but they remain perfectly usable for everyday driving when paired with healthy standard dampers.

Can I use Eibach springs with the original RS shocks?

Yes. They work very well with the standard RS dampers when those dampers remain in good condition.

Are BC Racing coilovers better than lowering springs?

They offer significantly more handling potential and adjustment. They cost more and require proper setup, but they are our preferred option for serious fast-road and regular track use.

Can BC coilovers be softer than the standard suspension?

The adjustable damping gives a wide range of setup. They can be configured relatively softly for road use or made considerably firmer for a more track-focused setup.

Is the Powerflex Handling Pack worthwhile?

Yes. It sharpens steering response, reduces unwanted movement and makes the front of the car feel more connected to the road.

Are the front wishbone bushes common for failing?

Yes. In particular, the rear bush in the front lower wishbone can crack and deteriorate with age.

Does an ST lower arm fit the RS?

No. The MK2 Focus RS requires the correct RS-specific lower control arm.

What does a failing wheel bearing sound like?

It normally causes a rumbling or droning noise that increases with road speed. A badly worn bearing may also develop measurable wheel play.

Do I need alignment after fitting lowering springs?

Yes. We recommend four-wheel alignment after springs, coilovers, bushes, lower arms or other significant suspension work.

What does the AIRTEC torque mount improve?

It reduces engine and gearbox movement and can reduce wheel hop while making the drivetrain feel more direct.

Does the bolt-in cage improve handling?

It adds chassis stiffness, but it is mainly a track-focused modification. For most road cars, suspension and geometry upgrades should come first.
