What is the best exhaust for the MK3 Focus RS?

Cobra Sport is our preferred exhaust brand for the MK3 Ford Focus RS. Its systems offer exceptional build quality, a wide choice of configurations and strong fitment, while being handmade and TIG-welded in the UK.

Cobra stainless-steel exhaust systems are backed by the manufacturer’s lifetime warranty for the original purchaser, subject to its current warranty conditions. Sports catalysts, downpipes and other specified components have separate warranty terms.

The best configuration depends on how loud you want the car to be and whether you want to retain control of the original exhaust valve.

For a road-driven Focus RS, our preferred setup is the Cobra Sport valved, non-resonated cat-back exhaust. It produces a noticeable increase in sound while retaining the ability to change the exhaust tone through the vehicle’s drive modes.

MK3 Focus RS exhaust sound levels

The Focus RS exhaust range includes several different sound levels. Choosing the right one is mainly about how much additional volume you want during everyday driving.

Resonated cat-back

A resonated cat-back is slightly louder than the standard Focus RS exhaust.

It retains a centre silencer, which helps reduce cabin resonance and keeps the overall sound relatively controlled. This is the best choice for owners who want a deeper and sportier exhaust note without making the car substantially louder.

Non-resonated cat-back

A non-resonated cat-back is noticeably louder than the original exhaust while retaining the standard catalytic converter and downpipe.

Removing the centre silencer gives the exhaust a stronger, more aggressive sound under acceleration. This is our preferred road setup when combined with the original exhaust valve.

Cobra Venom back-box delete

The Cobra Venom back-box-delete cat-back is considerably louder than the standard exhaust.

It is intended for owners who want a very aggressive exhaust note and are comfortable with the additional volume. It will be less subtle during everyday driving than a conventional resonated or non-resonated Cobra system.

Resonated turbo-back exhaust

A complete turbo-back exhaust with a resonated centre section is noticeably louder than standard.

Because it replaces the restrictive original downpipe and catalytic converter as well as the rear exhaust, it creates a stronger and deeper sound than a resonated cat-back alone.

Non-resonated turbo-back exhaust

A non-resonated turbo-back is louder again. It combines the additional flow and sound from the uprated downpipe with the absence of a centre silencer.

This is a much more aggressive system and may be too loud for owners who regularly cover long distances or want a subtle road car.

Valved versus non-valved Focus RS exhausts

Cobra Sport offers both valved and non-valved exhaust configurations for the MK3 Focus RS.

Valved exhaust

A valved system retains the original Ford exhaust-valve operation.

When you change between the vehicle’s drive modes, the exhaust can continue switching between quieter and louder settings. This gives you more control over the sound and is useful when starting the car early, driving on a motorway or entering a quieter residential area.

Retaining the valve does not significantly change the performance of the exhaust. It is primarily a convenience and sound-control feature.

Non-valved exhaust

A non-valved exhaust removes the original valve function and remains in its louder configuration permanently.

Changing drive modes will no longer change the exhaust volume. The absence of the valve will not normally cause a warning light, fault message or running issue when the system is fitted correctly.

The choice is personal:

  • Choose valved: If you want the ability to switch between quieter and louder exhaust settings.
  • Choose non-valved: If you always want the louder sound and do not need drive-mode control.

Best Focus RS exhaust for road use

Our preferred road setup is the Cobra Sport valved, non-resonated cat-back.

It provides:

  • A noticeable increase in exhaust sound
  • A more aggressive note under acceleration
  • Retention of the original catalytic converter
  • Continued operation of the factory exhaust valve
  • A choice of tailpipe designs
  • UK-made stainless-steel construction

Owners who want something quieter should choose the resonated version. Those looking for considerably more volume can consider the Venom back-box-delete system.

Does a cat-back exhaust add power?

A cat-back exhaust is mainly a sound and appearance modification on the MK3 Focus RS.

Although the larger pipework may provide a small reduction in back pressure, the standard downpipe and catalytic converter remain the main restrictions in the exhaust system. A cat-back alone will therefore provide very little meaningful power gain.

Choose a cat-back because you want:

  • More exhaust sound
  • A different tailpipe design
  • Improved stainless-steel construction
  • Valved or non-valved sound options

If the main objective is performance rather than sound, the downpipe and catalytic-converter section are more important.

Does a Stage 2 Focus RS need a turbo-back exhaust?

Yes. A complete turbo-back exhaust is required for a proper Stage 2 MK3 Focus RS setup.

The Cobra Sport Focus RS turbo-back exhaust replaces the system from the turbo backwards, including:

  • Downpipe
  • Original catalytic-converter section
  • Centre exhaust section
  • Rear exhaust section

The system uses 3-inch pipework and can be configured with a sports cat, resonated or non-resonated centre section and valved or non-valved rear section.

A suitable ECU calibration is required to make proper use of the increased exhaust flow and safely achieve the intended Stage 2 performance.

Where does the performance gain come from?

Most of the exhaust-related performance improvement comes from replacing the restrictive original downpipe and catalytic converter.

The factory components create significantly more restriction than the rear cat-back section. Replacing them allows the turbocharger to move exhaust gases more efficiently and reduces back pressure.

Realistic contributions are approximately:

  • Uprated downpipe: Around 5 bhp with suitable tuning.
  • Complete turbo-back system: Around 10–15 bhp with suitable tuning.

These figures are not guaranteed. Results depend on the ECU calibration, intake system, intercooler, fuel quality, ambient conditions and the condition of the individual vehicle.

Sports cat versus de-cat downpipe

The Cobra Sport Focus RS downpipe is available with either a high-flow sports catalyst or a de-cat section.

Sports cat

A high-quality sports cat is our recommended choice for a road-driven Focus RS.

It retains a catalytic converter while providing a substantial improvement in flow compared with the restrictive original component. At typical Stage 2 power levels, there is very little performance difference between a good sports cat and a de-cat.

A correctly installed sports cat should not normally bring on an engine-management light when the vehicle and sensors are operating correctly.

However, replacing the original emissions component can affect legal compliance. A sports cat should not be presented as guaranteeing road legality or an MOT pass. Compliance depends on the exact component, vehicle, emissions result and applicable regulations.

De-cat

A de-cat removes the catalytic converter completely and is intended for off-road or competition use only.

It will commonly trigger an engine-management light because the rear oxygen sensor detects that the expected catalyst operation is missing.

Suitable ECU software may prevent a warning light, but a remap does not make a de-cat legal for road use.

Is a de-cat more powerful than a sports cat?

At the normal power levels achieved by a Stage 2 MK3 Focus RS, there is very little practical performance difference between a good-quality sports cat and a de-cat.

A modern high-flow sports catalyst can flow almost as well while retaining an emissions-control component. This makes it the more sensible choice for most road cars.

A de-cat should only be chosen for a competition or off-road vehicle where road emissions compliance is not required.

Can an uprated downpipe be used with the standard cat-back?

Yes. The Cobra Sport and Scorpion downpipe options can be connected to the standard Focus RS cat-back exhaust as well as their respective aftermarket systems.

This allows the downpipe and catalytic-converter section to be upgraded separately before fitting a complete cat-back later.

However, for a complete Stage 2 package and the greatest overall improvement in flow and sound, we recommend a full 3-inch turbo-back system.

AIRTEC downpipe bracket upgrade

The AIRTEC Motorsport downpipe bracket is a worthwhile supporting upgrade when the downpipe is being replaced.

The original bracket uses rubber mountings that allow a large amount of movement and are common for deteriorating or failing with age.

The AIRTEC bracket provides more secure support for the exhaust and helps control movement around the downpipe. Because access is already available during a downpipe replacement, fitting it at the same time avoids repeating the work later.

What fitting parts should be replaced?

The downpipe is exposed to repeated heat cycles, road debris and corrosion. Original fixings can therefore seize or snap during removal.

Turbo-to-downpipe gasket

The Genuine Ford turbo-to-downpipe gasket should be replaced every time the downpipe is removed.

Reusing an old compressed gasket increases the risk of an exhaust leak around the turbo connection.

Downpipe clamp

The Genuine Ford downpipe clamp is commonly affected by corrosion and repeated heat cycles.

It may be possible to reuse the original clamp if it remains in excellent condition, but having a new one available prevents the installation being delayed if the original seizes, distorts or breaks during removal.

Turbo stud and nut

The original stud and nut can also seize or snap. We recommend having the following available before starting the job:

These may not always be required, but keeping them on hand is considerably easier than discovering a damaged fixing after the original exhaust has already been dismantled.

MK3 Focus RS exhaust fitment

The exhaust fitment is the same across the UK MK3 Focus RS range, including the later Edition models.

The relevant systems fit the 2.3-litre EcoBoost Focus RS, but customers should still check the individual product options carefully when selecting:

  • Resonated or non-resonated centre section
  • Valved or non-valved rear section
  • Sports cat or de-cat
  • Tailpipe design and finish

Frequently asked questions

What is the best MK3 Focus RS exhaust?

Our preferred road setup is the Cobra Sport valved, non-resonated cat-back. It provides a noticeable increase in sound while retaining the original drive-mode valve operation.

Why do you recommend Cobra Sport?

We recommend Cobra because of its build quality, fitment, wide range of configurations, UK manufacture and manufacturer warranty support.

Is a resonated exhaust much louder than standard?

A resonated cat-back is only slightly louder than the original exhaust and is the more subtle option.

How loud is a non-resonated cat-back?

It is noticeably louder than standard, particularly under acceleration, while still retaining the original catalytic converter.

What is the loudest cat-back option?

The Cobra Venom back-box-delete system is considerably louder than the standard exhaust and the normal resonated or non-resonated cat-backs.

Should I choose a valved exhaust?

Choose a valved exhaust if you want to retain quieter and louder modes. A non-valved system remains permanently in its louder configuration.

Will a non-valved exhaust create a warning light?

No. It should not normally create a valve-related warning or affect how the engine runs.

Does a cat-back exhaust add power?

Very little. A cat-back is primarily a sound and appearance modification because the original downpipe and catalytic converter remain in place.

Is a turbo-back exhaust required for Stage 2?

Yes. We recommend a complete 3-inch turbo-back exhaust, upgraded intercooler, induction kit and suitable ECU calibration for a proper Stage 2 setup.

How much power can a turbo-back exhaust add?

A complete turbo-back system may contribute approximately 10–15 bhp on a tuned car, although results vary between vehicles and specifications.

Is a sports cat better than a de-cat for road use?

Yes. A sports cat is the more sensible road-use choice and flows almost as well at normal Stage 2 power levels. It does not, however, guarantee legal compliance or an MOT pass.

Will a sports cat bring on the engine-management light?

It should not normally trigger a warning light when correctly installed and the vehicle’s sensors and calibration are operating properly.

Will a de-cat bring on the engine-management light?

A de-cat commonly triggers an engine-management light because the rear oxygen sensor no longer sees normal catalytic-converter operation.

Does a remap make a de-cat road legal?

No. ECU software may prevent a warning light, but it does not change the legal status of removing the catalytic converter.

Can I fit a downpipe to the standard exhaust?

Yes. The Cobra and Scorpion downpipes can be connected to the standard cat-back as well as compatible aftermarket systems.

Should the downpipe gasket be replaced?

Yes. Fit a new turbo-to-downpipe gasket whenever the downpipe is removed.

Should I order a new clamp, stud and nut?

Yes. The original parts are common for seizing or snapping, so having replacements available can prevent delays during fitting.
