  • Fitment: Same brake fitment across hatchback, estate and facelift MK4 Focus ST models.

MK4 Focus ST brake parts buying guide

The standard braking system fitted to the MK4 Focus ST is remarkably good.

Unlike some performance cars where one of the first modifications we recommend is an uprated disc and pad package, we are very happy to use Genuine Ford braking components on the MK4 ST.

For normal road driving, tuned road cars and enthusiastic fast-road use, there is no need to replace good-quality Genuine Ford discs and pads simply because the engine has been remapped.

Are the standard MK4 Focus ST brakes good?

Yes.

In our experience, the standard Ford braking setup performs extremely well.

The factory discs and pads provide strong braking performance while retaining the refinement, cold performance and low noise you would expect from an OEM braking system.

For the majority of road-driven MK4 Focus STs, we are perfectly happy recommending Genuine Ford replacement components rather than changing to an aftermarket setup.

Genuine Ford versus aftermarket brake discs

Genuine Ford brake discs are consistently very high quality.

In our own workshop and driving experience, we have managed to warp a number of aftermarket brake discs under hard use while the Genuine Ford discs have proven considerably more resistant.

That is one of the reasons we continue to recommend the factory discs rather than assuming that an aftermarket product must automatically be an upgrade.

For a road-going MK4 Focus ST, a fresh set of Genuine Ford discs and pads is an excellent braking setup.

MK4 Focus ST front brake discs

The Genuine Ford MK4 Focus ST front brake discs are supplied as a pair and are direct replacement factory components.

The front axle performs the majority of the braking work, so disc condition is particularly important here.

We recommend Genuine Ford replacements if the original discs are:

  • Below their minimum thickness
  • Heavily scored
  • Corroded
  • Showing excessive heat damage
  • Producing vibration under braking

MK4 Focus ST front brake pads

The Genuine Ford MK4 Focus ST front brake pads are our normal road replacement choice.

They work extremely well with the Genuine Ford discs and retain the characteristics the braking system was designed around.

For a normal road or fast-road car, we would not replace them with a more aggressive pad simply because the vehicle has been tuned.

MK4 Focus ST rear brake discs and pads

The rear braking system should be maintained to the same standard as the front.

We stock:

Even though the rear axle does less of the overall braking work, worn or corroded rear components can still affect braking balance, pedal feel and overall performance.

Should I replace the pads when replacing brake discs?

Yes.

If you are replacing the brake discs, we recommend fitting new pads at the same time.

Old brake pads have already worn themselves to the shape and surface condition of the old discs.

Installing those used pads against a fresh disc can:

  • Reduce the contact area initially
  • Prevent the new disc and pad surfaces bedding together correctly
  • Create uneven deposits on the new disc
  • Compromise braking performance

Considering the labour involved in changing the discs, fitting a fresh matching pad set at the same time is the sensible option.

Do tuned MK4 Focus STs need upgraded brakes?

Not automatically.

Increasing engine power does not mean you immediately need to replace the entire braking system.

The standard MK4 Focus ST brakes are already very capable, and in our experience Genuine Ford discs and pads remain an excellent setup on tuned road cars.

The condition of the braking system is much more important than fitting an aftermarket part simply because it is labelled as an upgrade.

Make sure the car has:

  • Good-condition discs
  • Healthy pads
  • Fresh brake fluid
  • No sticking calipers
  • No damaged or deteriorated brake hoses

Are aftermarket brake discs always better?

No.

This is something we feel quite strongly about based on experience.

There are some excellent aftermarket braking products available, but simply being drilled, grooved or marketed as a performance disc does not automatically make it better than the original Ford part.

We have personally experienced aftermarket discs warping under use where the Genuine Ford discs have remained trouble-free.

For a road-driven MK4 ST, we would rather use a high-quality Genuine Ford disc than fit an unknown aftermarket alternative simply for appearance or marketing claims.

Do drilled or grooved discs improve braking?

Not necessarily for normal road use.

The biggest factors in braking performance are the quality and condition of the disc and pad, the brake fluid and the overall health of the braking system.

A high-quality plain Genuine Ford disc paired with the correct pad can perform extremely well without needing drilled or grooved friction surfaces.

MK4 Focus ST braided brake lines

Braided brake lines are one of the few worthwhile changes we would consider alongside the standard Ford discs and pads.

Their main benefit is pedal feel rather than dramatically increasing braking force.

Standard flexible rubber hoses can expand slightly when hydraulic pressure increases.

A braided hose restricts this expansion, which can give:

  • A firmer brake pedal
  • A more direct pedal response
  • More consistent pedal feel during repeated braking

They work particularly well as a supporting modification when the braking system is already being serviced or the fluid is being changed.

Do braided lines shorten stopping distances?

Not dramatically on their own.

They do not create more grip between the tyre and road, and they do not fundamentally change the brake disc or pad friction characteristics.

The main improvement is the connection between your foot and the braking system – the pedal generally feels firmer and more immediate.

When should MK4 Focus ST brake discs be replaced?

Brake discs should be inspected for both thickness and condition rather than replaced based solely on mileage.

Reasons to replace them include:

  • Minimum thickness reached
  • Heavy scoring
  • Severe corrosion
  • Cracking
  • Heat damage
  • Persistent vibration under braking

If you are unsure, inspect and measure the discs before ordering replacements.

What causes brake vibration?

Brake vibration can have several causes and is not always simply a physically warped disc.

Possible causes include:

  • Uneven pad deposits on the disc
  • Heat damage
  • Disc thickness variation
  • Corrosion between the disc and hub mounting face
  • Wheel or suspension problems

The cause should be properly diagnosed before replacing parts unnecessarily.

Should new brakes be bedded in?

Yes.

New discs and pads need an initial bedding period to allow the friction surfaces to mate correctly.

Avoid immediately subjecting a brand-new disc and pad set to repeated emergency-style braking unless necessary.

Allow the braking surfaces to bed together progressively and always follow any instructions supplied with the components.

Hatchback versus estate brake fitment

The braking components covered in this collection use the same fitment across MK4 Focus ST hatchback and estate models.

You do not need a separate front or rear disc and pad setup simply because the car is an estate.

Pre-facelift versus facelift

The brake parts covered here use the same fitment across pre-facelift and facelift MK4 Focus ST models.

This makes replacement parts much simpler to select than areas such as exhausts or styling, where body-style and model-year differences can be much more important.

Best brake setup for a road MK4 Focus ST

For the vast majority of road cars, our preferred setup is simple:

  • Genuine Ford front brake discs
  • Genuine Ford front pads
  • Genuine Ford rear discs
  • Genuine Ford rear pads
  • Braided brake lines if you want a firmer pedal feel
  • Good-quality fresh brake fluid

There is no need to make the braking system unnecessarily complicated when the factory components already perform so well.

Frequently asked questions

Are the standard MK4 Focus ST brakes good?

Yes. We consider them remarkably good for a factory road braking system.

Do I need upgraded brakes after tuning my MK4 ST?

Not automatically. Genuine Ford discs and pads remain an excellent setup for tuned road cars when they are in good condition.

Are Genuine Ford brake discs good quality?

Yes. In our experience they are extremely high quality and have proven more resistant to warping than several aftermarket discs we have used.
