Are the standard Focus ST250 brakes good enough?
The standard MK3 Focus ST250 braking system is very capable from the factory. For normal road use, including Stage 1 and Stage 2 tuned cars, there is no need to replace the complete braking system simply because the engine has been modified.
For a standard or tuned road car, our preferred setup is to retain the original brake configuration and use high-quality Genuine Ford replacement discs and pads.
This maintains the braking performance, pedal feel, refinement and reliability that Ford designed into the car without fitting larger or more complicated components unnecessarily.

Fitting the PBS pads to both the front and rear maintains a balanced braking setup. We would not recommend upgrading only one axle for a complete fast-road setup when the matching rear pads are available.
The PBS ProRace compound provides stronger initial bite, improved control and more consistent braking when temperatures rise. It is listed with a working temperature range of 0–800°C, making it suitable for demanding fast-road and track use.

For track use, our recommendation remains PBS ProRace pads on both the front and rear axles, fitted with Genuine Ford brake discs.
The standard ST250 braking hardware is already strong. Upgrading the pad compound provides the biggest practical improvement for repeated high-temperature braking without immediately moving to a larger and significantly more expensive brake conversion.
Using PBS pads front and rear helps maintain braking balance and provides more consistent performance across the complete car.
Brake condition should always be checked before a track day. Discs, pads, calipers and hydraulic components must all be in suitable condition, with sufficient material remaining for the planned use.
Do you need performance brake discs?
Not necessarily. Our recommended fast-road and track setup uses Genuine Ford brake discs with PBS ProRace pads.
The Genuine Ford discs provide the correct dimensions, fitment and braking surface for the ST250. For most road, fast-road and occasional track cars, the pad compound is the more important upgrade.
This also makes future maintenance straightforward, as the car continues to use readily available original-specification brake discs.
Should PBS pads be fitted front and rear?
Yes. For both fast-road and track use, we recommend fitting PBS ProRace pads to the front and rear axles together.
The front brakes perform most of the braking work, but the rear brakes still contribute to the balance and stability of the car. Using the matching compound at both ends creates a more consistent complete braking setup.
For ordinary road use, Genuine Ford pads remain the preferred option on both axles.
Focus ST250 front brake backing plates
The original front brake backing plates are common for corroding as the car ages. Although they are not a performance upgrade, replacing badly corroded or damaged backing plates helps restore the braking assembly properly.

They are sensible to replace while the front brakes or surrounding components are already dismantled if the originals are heavily corroded.
Do Focus ST250 brake pads need bedding in?
Genuine Ford brake pads
Genuine Ford pads do not require the structured high-temperature bedding procedure used for performance brake pads.
After installation, the brakes should still be used sensibly while the new pads and discs establish full contact. Avoid unnecessary heavy braking immediately after fitting unless required for safety.
PBS ProRace brake pads
PBS ProRace pads should be bedded in according to the current instructions supplied by PBS.
Correct bedding helps establish an even transfer layer between the pads and discs and allows the performance compound to work as intended. Always follow the specific PBS procedure included with the pads rather than using a generic process.
