What is the best exhaust for a Corsa E VXR?
Cobra Sport is our preferred exhaust brand for the Corsa E VXR.
In our experience, the build quality and fitment are excellent. Cobra systems are hand-made and TIG-welded in the UK and offer a good choice of sound levels, tailpipe finishes and complete system configurations.
For a tuned road-going Corsa E VXR, our preferred setup is a complete 3-inch Cobra Sport turbo-back system with a sports cat.
You can then choose between resonated and non-resonated depending on how loud you want the car to be.
Corsa E VXR exhaust sound levels
Resonated cat-back
The resonated centre and rear system is slightly louder than the standard exhaust.
It retains a centre silencer, which keeps the exhaust relatively refined while giving the car a deeper and more sporting tone.
The Cobra Sport centre and rear exhaust is available in both resonated and non-resonated versions.
Non-resonated cat-back
The non-resonated version is noticeably louder than standard.
Removing the centre silencer allows more exhaust note through and is better suited to owners who want the car to sound obviously modified.
Resonated turbo-back
A complete resonated turbo-back is noticeably louder than the standard system and has a deeper, fuller exhaust note.
It retains the centre silencer, making it the more refined option for a tuned road car.
Non-resonated turbo-back
The non-resonated turbo-back is considerably louder and more aggressive than the standard exhaust.
This is the option to choose if sound is a major part of the upgrade and you are happy with a more noticeable exhaust note during everyday driving.
Resonated or non-resonated?
Choose resonated if:
- You use the car every day.
- You cover a lot of motorway miles.
- You want a deeper exhaust note without making the car excessively loud.
- You prefer a more refined road setup.
Choose non-resonated if:
- You want the exhaust to sound obviously louder than stock.
- Exhaust sound is one of the main reasons for the upgrade.
- You prefer a stronger, deeper tone under acceleration.
The choice is mainly about sound rather than performance.
Cobra Venom box-delete exhaust
The Cobra Sport Venom box-delete exhaust is the loudest option in the range.
It removes the conventional rear silencer and produces a very aggressive exhaust note.
Cobra specifically states that this system is extremely loud and is sold for non-road use only because of its noise level.
This makes it more appropriate for motorsport, show or dedicated off-road applications than for a normal daily-driven road car.
Does a cat-back exhaust add power?
A cat-back exhaust is mainly a sound and appearance modification on the Corsa E VXR.
You may gain a small amount of power from the freer-flowing rear system, but the majority of the useful exhaust-related performance improvement comes from replacing the more restrictive front exhaust and catalytic-converter section.
If power is the main goal, a complete 3-inch turbo-back system is much more worthwhile than a cat-back alone.
How much power does a turbo-back exhaust add?
On a correctly tuned Corsa E VXR, we would expect a complete 3-inch turbo-back exhaust to contribute approximately 10 horsepower.
The exact result depends on:
- ECU calibration
- Boost pressure
- Intake system
- Intercooler efficiency
- Condition of the engine and turbocharger
Does Stage 1 need an exhaust?
No.
A Corsa E VXR can be tuned to Stage 1 using the standard exhaust system.
The exhaust can still be upgraded for sound or in preparation for moving to Stage 2 later, but it is not required for Stage 1.
For our complete upgrade path, read our Corsa E VXR tuning guide.
What exhaust does Stage 2 require?
For our Stage 2 setup, we recommend a complete 3-inch turbo-back exhaust system.
This significantly reduces the restriction in the front section compared with the standard catalytic-converter arrangement.
A typical Stage 2 setup includes:
- 3-inch turbo-back exhaust
- Suitable high-flow intake
- Custom ECU calibration
Our Corsa E VXR Stage 2 cars typically produce approximately 230–245hp.
What exhaust does Stage 3 require?
Stage 3 retains the same 3-inch turbo-back exhaust used at Stage 2.
The additional hardware requirement is primarily improved charge-air cooling through an uprated intercooler.
There is no reason to replace a good quality Stage 2 turbo-back system when moving to Stage 3.
Sports cat versus de-cat
Sports cat
For a road-going Corsa E VXR, we recommend the sports-cat option rather than a de-cat.
In our experience, there is very little meaningful performance difference between a quality high-flow sports cat and a de-cat at normal Corsa E VXR power levels.
The Cobra Sport front pipe is available with either a sports catalyst or de-cat section.
Cobra states that its sports catalyst is not EC homologated, so fitment does not automatically guarantee road legality or MOT compliance. Always check the relevant approval and local requirements before ordering.
De-cat
A de-cat removes the catalytic converter entirely.
This option should be treated as a motorsport or off-road-only modification.
Cobra explicitly lists the de-cat version for motorsport and off-road use only.
Will a de-cat cause an engine-management light?
Normally, yes.
The ECU monitors catalytic-converter operation through the exhaust lambda sensors.
Once the catalyst is removed, the ECU can detect that the expected emissions behaviour is no longer present and trigger an engine-management warning.
Changing software to prevent a warning does not change the legal status of the exhaust hardware.
Is a de-cat faster than a sports cat?
On the majority of tuned Corsa E VXR builds, the performance difference is very small.
A good high-flow sports catalyst already flows extremely well, so we would not remove the catalyst from a road car simply in pursuit of a very small theoretical airflow advantage.
Cobra Sport turbo-back exhaust
The Cobra Sport Corsa E VXR turbo-back exhaust uses 3-inch / 76.2mm pipework from the turbo backwards.
It is available with:
- Sports catalyst
- Resonated centre section
- Non-resonated centre section
- Several different tailpipe finishes
This makes it our preferred complete system for a Stage 2 or Stage 3 road car.
Cobra Sport versus Scorpion
Both Cobra Sport and Scorpion offer quality exhaust components for the Corsa E VXR.
Our personal preference is Cobra Sport because of its:
- Excellent build quality
- Consistent fitment
- Hand TIG-welded construction
- UK manufacture
- Wide range of complete system configurations
The Scorpion cat-back remains a good alternative where the customer prefers the Scorpion design or sound.
Scorpion 3-inch de-cat pipe
The Scorpion 3-inch de-cat pipe is another high-flow front-section option.
As with any de-cat, it should be treated as an off-road or motorsport modification rather than a road-use option.
Corsa E VXR Performance Pack exhaust fitment
Exhaust fitment is the same across the Corsa E VXR range.
This includes:
- Standard Corsa E VXR models
- Performance Pack models
- All Corsa E VXR model years
Unlike the Corsa D VXR, there is no early-versus-late engine layout complication requiring different front exhaust configurations.
Best exhaust setup by tuning stage
Standard car
Fit a cat-back if you mainly want improved exhaust sound and appearance.
Stage 1
The original exhaust is adequate. Upgrade it only for sound or future Stage 2 preparation.
Stage 2
Our preferred setup is:
- Cobra Sport 3-inch turbo-back
- Sports cat
- Resonated or non-resonated centre section according to sound preference
- Suitable intake upgrade
- Custom ECU calibration
Stage 3
Retain the same 3-inch turbo-back exhaust and add the required intercooler and supporting hardware.
