How capable is the standard MK3 Focus RS clutch?
The standard Genuine Ford MK3 Focus RS clutch is extremely capable. It is suitable for standard cars, Stage 1 and Stage 2 builds, and a large number of Stage 3 setups.
In our real-world experience, the original RS clutch has reliably handled approximately 450–460 lb-ft while retaining smooth factory drivability.
This means an aftermarket clutch is not automatically required simply because the car has been remapped or fitted with supporting performance hardware.
The standard clutch generally only becomes unsuitable when chasing substantially higher power and torque with a considerably larger turbocharger.
Is the Focus RS clutch an upgrade?
For the MK3 Focus RS, the clutch kits in this collection are Genuine Ford replacement components rather than performance upgrades.
The same RS clutch is commonly fitted as an upgrade to the MK3 Focus ST250, but it is the original-style clutch specification for the RS itself.
Replacing a worn RS clutch with another Genuine Ford assembly restores the original torque capacity, smooth pedal operation and factory-style engagement.
Why do we normally recommend the complete clutch and flywheel kit?
Replacing the clutch on the four-wheel-drive MK3 Focus RS involves considerably more labour than replacing the clutch on a simpler front-wheel-drive vehicle.
Because the gearbox and surrounding drivetrain components have already been removed, we generally recommend replacing all the main wear components together:
- Clutch plate
- Clutch cover
- Dual-mass flywheel
- Slave cylinder
- Single-use flywheel bolts
The complete Genuine Ford Focus RS clutch and flywheel kit is therefore our preferred option for most RS clutch replacements.
Although replacing every component costs more in parts, it reduces the risk of paying for the same substantial labour again if an older flywheel or slave cylinder subsequently fails.
Complete clutch kit or three-piece clutch kit?
Complete clutch and flywheel kit
The complete kit is the best choice when:
- The clutch has slipped.
- The dual-mass flywheel has excessive play or noise.
- The condition or history of the existing flywheel is unknown.
- The car has covered substantial mileage.
- You want to minimise the risk of repeating the gearbox-removal labour.
For most MK3 Focus RS owners, this is the most sensible complete repair.
Three-piece clutch kit
The Genuine Ford three-piece clutch kit includes:
- Clutch plate
- Clutch cover
- Slave cylinder
It can be fitted where the existing dual-mass flywheel is known to be healthy and the previous clutch has never slipped.
However, because of the labour involved in accessing the clutch on the four-wheel-drive RS, we would generally still advise fitting the complete clutch and flywheel kit.
Two-piece clutch kit
The Genuine Ford two-piece clutch kit includes the clutch plate and cover but does not include the slave cylinder.
We would only normally choose this option where:
- The slave cylinder has very recently been replaced.
- Its condition and history are known.
- The customer is working to a strict parts budget.
In most cases, replacing the slave cylinder while access is available is the better long-term decision.
Should the dual-mass flywheel be replaced?
The existing dual-mass flywheel can technically be retained if it has no excessive movement, damage or noise and the previous clutch has never slipped.
If the clutch has slipped at all, we advise replacing the flywheel.
Clutch slip generates substantial heat and glazes the flywheel friction surface. Fitting a new clutch against this glazed surface can prevent the new clutch bedding in correctly and compromise its operation from the beginning.
The flywheel should also be replaced where there is:
- Excessive rotational movement
- Abnormal rattling or mechanical noise
- Visible heat damage
- Surface damage
The Genuine Ford MK3 Focus RS dual-mass flywheel is available with new flywheel bolts.
Should the slave cylinder be replaced?
Yes. We recommend replacing the slave cylinder whenever the clutch is changed.
The slave cylinder is located inside the gearbox bellhousing. If it fails after the original clutch work has been completed, the gearbox must be removed again to replace it.
The Genuine Ford Focus RS slave cylinder is included with the three-piece and complete clutch kits but can also be purchased separately.
The small saving from reusing an older slave cylinder rarely justifies the risk of repeating the labour later.
Are the flywheel bolts reusable?
No. The flywheel bolts are single-use stretch bolts and should be replaced once removed.
Reusing previously stretched bolts risks incorrect clamping force when the flywheel is refitted.
Where the flywheel is purchased separately, select the version supplied with new bolts or order the required Genuine Ford bolts alongside it.
Does launch control increase clutch wear?
Yes. Repeated use of launch control and frequent hard launches can noticeably accelerate clutch wear.
The four-wheel-drive system provides a high level of traction, meaning the clutch and drivetrain absorb a substantial load rather than allowing the front tyres to spin freely.
Occasional launch-control use does not mean the clutch will immediately fail, but repeated launches will reduce its service life compared with normal road driving.
The effect will depend on:
- How frequently the car is launched
- Engine torque
- Clutch temperature
- Vehicle weight
- Driving technique
- The age and condition of the existing clutch
How do you test for clutch slip?
Clutch slip is normally easiest to identify under heavy load in a high gear.
A common test is to drive at relatively low engine speed in fifth or sixth gear and apply full throttle.
If the engine speed rises rapidly without a corresponding increase in road speed, the clutch is slipping.
Other possible symptoms include:
- A higher-than-normal clutch bite point
- A burning clutch smell
- Reduced acceleration despite rising revs
- Slip becoming worse once the clutch is warm
- Slip during high-boost acceleration
Once slipping begins, continuing to drive the vehicle hard creates additional heat and further damages the flywheel friction surface.
When does the Focus RS need an aftermarket clutch?
An aftermarket clutch is generally unnecessary for standard, Stage 1 and Stage 2 cars.
The Genuine Ford clutch is also suitable for many Stage 3 builds, provided the torque output remains within its proven working range.
We would begin considering an aftermarket clutch where the car is using:
- A substantially larger turbocharger
- A high-torque engine build
- Power and torque beyond the comfortable capacity of the original clutch
- Frequent drag-style launches
- Dedicated competition use
The correct clutch should be selected according to measured torque and intended use rather than relying only on a Stage 1, Stage 2 or Stage 3 label.
A more aggressive clutch may introduce a heavier pedal, sharper engagement, judder or additional noise, so it should not be fitted unless the additional capacity is genuinely required.
Do we recommend a single-mass flywheel?
No. For normal road, fast-road and typical tuned RS builds, we recommend retaining the dual-mass flywheel.
A single-mass conversion can introduce:
- Gearbox chatter
- Additional vibration
- More drivetrain noise
- Harsher engagement
- Reduced everyday refinement
The Genuine Ford clutch and dual-mass flywheel are capable of supporting the vast majority of RS builds while maintaining the smooth operation expected from a road car.
